Sensitive Chaos is a collection of musicians from around the world that typically only perform together from the comfort of their studios on the six albums made to date.
When their 'March of the Timeshifters' album was nominated by Zone Music Reporter as the Best Electronic Album of 2015, they knew they were going to attend the award show to see if they won. And then it dawned on them to book a show in New Orleans the night before the festivities and celebrate a few of them actually being in the same town at the same time.
They found a cool performance venue in New Orleans and Jim Combs (from Atlanta, GA), Josie Quick (from Denver, CO), and Christian Birk (from Atlanta, GA and New Orleans, LA) were able to play some never-heard-before, never-to-be-heard-again music. They opened for Justin Blaire Vial's allthecolorsofthedark with Mark Loque, and Proud Father closed out the evening.
The small venue was packed the night of the show with a combination of local family and friends from New Orleans, musicians, radio DJs, album reviewers, and Zone Music Reporter staff in town for the Zone Music Awards. We are grateful for the support and enjoyed performing to such a warm and receptive crowd.
This recording is a souvenir of that evening for all the folks that attended and those that were not able to make it to the show.
There was very little preparation for the show beyond one track Jim threw together to establish tempo and key to start the show, another short rehearsal Jim and Christian did to make sure their equipment would sync, and a few notes of a looping violin idea Josie contributed in the days leading up to May 5.
What you hear in the first three tracks are excerpts from the 45 min set, then the audiences response and introduction of the band. Most of the music you hear is improvised on the spot. There is no editing of these pieces and what you hear is what the audience heard that night. And finally, we have included short sections of Jim’s and Jim and Christian’s initial ideas that helped shape how the players approached the evening.
The first Sensitive Chaos album was released ten years ago and the premise was simple. Perform live, capture those performances into recordings or MIDI sequences, take them back to the studio to arrange and orchestrate, invite amazingly talented people to add their unique contributions, mix and master it, and get it into the hands of interested fans, reviewers, and radio programmers.
Let the universe flow through you, see what happens, get it onto tape, share it with as many people as possible. Rinse and repeat ad infinitum.
Blessings and sincere thanks!
Many thanks to all the folks who attended the show and were
a part of the Zone Music Awards 2016 show.
